Sights and Smells From the Past

Gerbie and I had the opportunity to attend a Mennonite auction last weekend.  It was a fantastic step back in time.  Because of their beliefs, I hesitated taking photos of the people themselves but managed to get a few that brought back childhood memories.

I know we had one of these but have no idea what it was called.

As children we used to climb on the thrasher in the barn all the time, much to the chagrin of our parents. In fact a small portion of one of the belts was used as a threat by my Mother as the “Strap”!

The hay mow was a special place for me. The smell  brought back memories of helping Dad on the farm. This old barn with its massive timbers and  pitch forks was also a visual reminder of my childhood  and an emotional trip down memory lane.

It was a great day spent envisioning the lives of another culture, who neither want, nor need the amenities that we deem necessary for our everyday lives.

I like this trip down memory land, DohNa. Thanks. BTW, I have Mom’s strap in my collection. Maybe I can take a photo and post it. 🙂 Just to give you the shudders.

I showed Gerry the belt that the strap was made of but somehow, it didn’t seem quite so scary attached to the thrasher!

This was fun, this trip. I never knew that was where the strap came from. Interesting……….’cause Ma and Pa in our grown up years were always such gentle creatures! From what I’ve heard, it was simply their scare tactic. 🙂

I love that first ladder picture, DohNa. 🙂
